What is the real name of the character known as 'Amon'?

The character known as Amon is actually Noatak. He is introduced in Book One: Air as the masked leader of the Equalists, a revolutionary movement that opposes benders and seeks to remove bending from society’s power structure.

Noatak was born in the Northern Water Tribe and is the eldest son of the notorious bloodbender Yakone. Yakone trained Noatak and his younger brother Tarrlok in bloodbending from childhood. After Noatak rebelled against his father’s control, he disappeared and later returned to Republic City under the name Amon.

Amon claims that a mysterious spiritual power allows him to take away bending. The truth is more complicated: he uses bloodbending to block a person’s chi paths, creating the appearance that he can permanently remove bending through energybending. Tarrlok eventually reveals Amon’s identity and family history to Korra.

The name Amon is therefore an alias, not his birth name. Unalaq, Yakone, and Tarrlok are separate characters: Unalaq is Korra’s uncle, Yakone is Noatak’s father, and Tarrlok is his younger brother. Amon’s identity is exposed near the end of Book One, destroying the political force behind the Equalist revolution.
