The quinceañera’s traditional male escort or court attendant is called a chambelán.
A chambelán may escort the celebrant during her entrance, take part in the formal dance, and appear with the court of honor. The word is associated with the Spanish term for a chamberlain or court attendant, giving the role a ceremonial rather than romantic meaning.
A celebration may have one principal chambelán or several chambelanes. In some families, the main escort is a brother, cousin, friend, or another trusted person. The role is not identical to padrino, which generally means a male sponsor or godfather, or madrina, a female sponsor or godmother.
Modern quinceañeras frequently adapt the role. Some use a mixed-gender court, choose a female escort, or omit escorts entirely. Those variations do not change the traditional name for the male court role.
