What is the quinceañera traditionally called when the honoree is male?

The story behind the answer

When the honoree is male, the celebration is traditionally called a quinceañero.

The term changes the Spanish grammatical ending from quinceañera, the feminine form, to quinceañero, the masculine form. Both words refer to a fifteenth-birthday coming-of-age celebration, although quinceañera is far more widely known and historically more common.

A quinceañero may include many familiar elements, such as a formal entrance, family speeches, special clothing, music, dancing, and a religious service when the family is Catholic. The exact program is determined by the family and community rather than by a universal rule.

Contemporary families may also use inclusive or personalized names for the event. The traditional masculine term should therefore be understood as a vocabulary fact, not as a requirement that every male honoree follow a particular ceremony or gendered role.
