The girl being honored at the celebration is called the quinceañera. In common English usage, the same word can also describe the entire fifteenth-birthday celebration.
The term comes from Spanish and is feminine because it traditionally refers to a girl reaching age fifteen. A boy’s comparable celebration may be called a quinceañero, although names and practices differ across communities.
The quinceañera is usually the visual focus of the event. She may wear a formal gown, participate in a choreographed presentation, receive symbolic gifts, and be introduced to guests by family members.
Not every celebration follows the same script. Some families use a large court and formal reception, while others choose a small gathering, a religious service, or a contemporary party that keeps only selected traditions.
