What is the Pokémon region inspired mainly by Great Britain in Pokémon Sword and Shield?

The story behind the answer

Galar is the region inspired mainly by Great Britain in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced Galar as the setting for the series’ first mainline games on Nintendo Switch. Its landscape includes countryside, industrial cities, snowy areas, coastal locations, and a large central Wild Area. The region’s visual design draws from the geography and cultural imagery of Great Britain while remaining a fictional Pokémon setting.

The games’ Gym Challenge is presented as a major sporting event, echoing the importance of organized football and other stadium sports in Britain. Stadiums, uniforms, cheering crowds, and the Dynamax phenomenon reinforce that theme. The region also introduced new species such as Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble, Zacian, and Zamazenta.

Galar is sometimes confused with Kalos, the region inspired by France and introduced in Pokémon X and Y. It is also distinct from Paldea, which draws mainly on the Iberian Peninsula and appears in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
