What is the orbital period of asteroid 55 Pandora around the Sun?

The story behind the answer

Asteroid 55 Pandora takes about 4.58 years to orbit the Sun.

55 Pandora is a main-belt asteroid with a semimajor axis of roughly 2.76 astronomical units. Kepler’s laws explain its orbital period: objects farther from the Sun generally take longer to complete an orbit. Pandora’s period is therefore substantially longer than Earth’s one-year orbit but much shorter than Jupiter’s nearly twelve-year orbit.

The value is usually given as approximately 4.58 years because an asteroid’s orbit is described using measured orbital elements and can be refined over time. It should not be confused with the rotation period, which describes how quickly Pandora spins on its axis rather than how long it takes to circle the Sun.

The object’s number and name also create a common mix-up with Saturn’s moon Pandora. The asteroid is a solar-orbiting minor planet; the moon circles Saturn while Saturn circles the Sun.
