Africa is the only continent through which both the Equator and the Prime Meridian pass.
The Equator crosses Africa from the Atlantic coast through countries including Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. The Prime Meridian crosses the continent farther west, passing through Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana before reaching the Gulf of Guinea.
Their intersection is not on land: the two lines cross in the Atlantic Ocean near the Gulf of Guinea, west of Africa’s coast. Africa therefore occupies all four hemispheres, because it extends north and south of the Equator and east and west of the Prime Meridian.
The Equator is defined as 0 degrees latitude, while the Prime Meridian is 0 degrees longitude. The modern internationally recognized Prime Meridian passes through Greenwich, London, but longitude continues around the globe, allowing both reference lines to cross Africa.
