Africa is the only continent crossed by both the Equator and the Prime Meridian.
The Equator crosses Africa near the centre of the continent, passing through countries including Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Somalia. It divides Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
The Prime Meridian, defined as 0 degrees longitude, crosses western Africa through Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Algeria. It divides the planet into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The modern internationally agreed reference meridian passes through Greenwich, London, but continues southward across Europe and Africa.
Africa’s position on both lines is a geographic distinction, not a political one. South America is crossed by the Equator but not the Prime Meridian, while Europe is crossed by the Prime Meridian but not the Equator. Asia is crossed by the Equator in island territories but not by 0 degrees longitude.
