What is the only city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics? The answer is Beijing.
Beijing became the first city to host both versions of the modern Olympic Games. It staged the Summer Olympics in 2008 and the Winter Olympics in 2022. The Winter Games took place from 4 to 20 February, with events spread across Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.
The achievement was possible because Beijing already possessed major venues from 2008. The National Stadium, known as the Bird's Nest, hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for both editions, while the National Aquatics Centre was adapted for curling in 2022. Mountain events were held outside the urban centre, where suitable snow and terrain were available.
Beijing's distinction is city-based: other places have hosted multiple Summer or multiple Winter Games, but no earlier city had hosted one of each. A related source of confusion is that the Summer and Winter Olympics were traditionally held in the same year until the schedule was staggered from 1994 onward. Beijing's two editions were therefore separated by 14 years.
