What is the oldest university in South America?

The story behind the answer

The National University of San Marcos is the oldest university in South America.

Located in Lima, Peru, San Marcos was officially founded on May 12, 1551, by a royal decree issued under Charles I of Spain. It began operating in the Spanish colonial period and later received pontifical status from Pope Pius V in 1571. The institution is commonly known as Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, or UNMSM.

San Marcos describes itself as the oldest continuously operating university in the Americas, not merely in South America. Its early curriculum included theology and arts, followed later by law and medicine. The university moved through several historic buildings before establishing its modern university city in Lima.

A common confusion involves universities founded in the same broad colonial era, including the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico, also dated to 1551. For South American institutions, however, San Marcos is the standard answer because of its early official foundation and uninterrupted operation.
