What is the officially measured height of Mount Everest?

The story behind the answer

The officially measured height of Mount Everest is 8,848.86 metres.

Nepal and China announced this joint figure in December 2020 after separate surveys of the mountain. The measurement includes the snow and ice cap on the summit, rather than only the underlying rock.

Everest stands in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and Tibet, an autonomous region of China. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, while in Tibet it is known as Chomolungma.

Earlier official figures differed slightly because survey methods, geodetic reference systems and the summit snow layer can vary. The mountain's height also changes subtly through geological uplift and changing ice conditions.
