What is the official state pie of Florida?
Answer
Key lime pie
Answer
Key lime pie
The official state pie of Florida is Key lime pie. This Floridian dessert combines Key lime juice, egg yolks, and sweetened condensed milk, traditionally in a graham-cracker crust.
Its distinctive filling thickens through a reaction between acidic lime juice and proteins in the egg yolks and condensed milk. The pie may be topped with meringue or whipped cream, or served without a topping. Despite its name, the filling is usually yellow because ripe Key limes have yellow juice.
Key lime pie is closely associated with Key West and the Florida Keys. Its exact origin is debated, but documented versions appeared in the 1930s: a 1933 Miami newspaper described a tropical lime chiffon pie, and a recipe called “Key Lime Pie” was published in 1940. A popular story credits William Curry’s cook, Aunt Sally, but no evidence confirms it.
Florida statute 15.052, passed in July 2006, officially designated Key lime pie as the state pie. Key limes are more aromatic and tart than the Persian limes commonly sold in U.S. supermarkets.
