What is the official name of Line 1 of the Toronto subway?

The story behind the answer

The official name of Line 1 of the Toronto subway is Yonge–University.

Line 1 Yonge–University is operated by the Toronto Transit Commission and runs through Toronto and neighbouring Vaughan in Ontario. It is the longest line in the Toronto subway system, linking the city’s northern suburbs with downtown landmarks such as Union Station and major institutions along University Avenue.

The line began as the Yonge subway in 1954, when Toronto opened Canada’s first underground passenger railway. It expanded northward and westward over several decades. The present name reflects its two principal corridors: the Yonge section east of downtown and the University section west of it. The line was numbered “1” when the TTC introduced numbered subway routes.

A frequent confusion is using “Yonge–University–Spadina,” an older name associated with the route before the TTC shortened it to Yonge–University. Eglinton is a station and a future interchange area, while Sheppard and Bloor–Danforth are associated with other Toronto subway lines.
