What is the official mascot of the Carnival of Viareggio?
Answer
Burlamacco
Answer
Burlamacco
The official mascot of the Carnival of Viareggio is Burlamacco.
Burlamacco is the instantly recognizable comic figure associated with Viareggio’s famous float parades in Tuscany. Designed by the Viareggio artist Uberto Bonetti, the character combines visual traits from several traditional Italian masks, including Arlecchino, Pierrot, Rugantino and Doctor Balanzone. His red-and-white diamond-patterned costume, black cape and tall red hat give him a distinctly theatrical appearance.
Bonetti created Burlamacco in 1930, and the character first appeared publicly on the 1931 carnival poster alongside Ondina, a bathing-costume figure representing Viareggio’s summer identity. Burlamacco quickly became more than an illustration: he developed into the emblematic face and mascot of the carnival itself.
Readers sometimes confuse him with Pantalone, Pulcinella or Arlecchino, all established characters from Italy’s commedia dell’arte tradition. Burlamacco is different because he was created specifically for Viareggio Carnival, although his design deliberately borrows recognizable features from those older masks. Ondina is also officially associated with the event, but Burlamacco is its principal mascot and best-known symbol.
