What is the official height of Mount Everest recognized by Nepal and China?

The story behind the answer

The official height of Mount Everest recognized by Nepal and China is 8,848.86 metres.

Nepal and China announced this jointly agreed elevation in December 2020. The measurement includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, rather than only the rock beneath it. A modern survey used satellite positioning and other geodetic techniques to calculate the summit’s elevation.

Everest is part of the Himalayas and stands on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. Its summit is the highest point above mean sea level on Earth. The mountain is called Sagarmatha in Nepal and Qomolangma in Tibet.

Older references often give 8,848 metres or 8,850 metres because earlier surveys produced slightly different results. The mountain continues to rise very slowly as the Indian tectonic plate moves beneath the Eurasian Plate.
