The official elevation of Mount Everest’s summit, measured by Nepal and China in 2020, is 8,848.86 metres.
Everest stands in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Nepal commonly calls it Sagarmatha, while Tibetans call it Chomolungma. The mountain is the highest point above mean sea level.
Nepal and China announced the jointly agreed 8,848.86-metre height in December 2020. The figure includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, which can change over time because of weather, snowfall, and geological activity.
Older measurements produced slightly different values, including 8,848 metres and 8,850 metres. Those differences do not indicate different mountains; they reflect survey methods and whether the summit ice was included.
