Answer
8,848.86 metres
The official elevation of Mount Everest listed by Nepal and China is 8,848.86 metres.
Everest is the highest mountain above sea level and forms part of the Himalayas on the Nepal–China border. Nepal announced the 8,848.86-metre measurement in 2020 after a new survey, and China agreed with the figure. The measurement includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, which can vary over time.
The mountain is known in Nepal as Sagarmatha and in Tibet as Chomolungma. Its English name honours George Everest, the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, although he never saw the mountain in person.
Earlier official measurements differed slightly because of surveying methods and decisions about whether to include snow. Everest is not the tallest mountain when measured from base to summit: Mauna Kea in Hawaii is taller by that measure, though much of it lies underwater.
