What is the official currency of Vietnam, subdivided into 10 hào or 100 xu?

The story behind the answer

The official currency of Vietnam, subdivided into 10 hào or 100 xu, is the Vietnamese đồng.

The State Bank of Vietnam issues the đồng, whose currency code is VND and whose symbol is commonly written as ₫. The word đồng means “copper” in Vietnamese, reflecting the historical use of copper coins in the region.

North Vietnam introduced a đồng in 1946, while South Vietnam used its own đồng until reunification. The modern currency followed monetary reforms after Vietnam became unified in 1976, and another major redenomination occurred in 1985.

A common mix-up is confusing the đồng with the currencies of neighbouring Laos and Cambodia. Vietnamese banknotes are normally used rather than coins, because low-value coins ceased to be practical in everyday circulation. The đồng’s large numerical denominations are a familiar feature of prices in Vietnam.
