What is the official currency of Botswana?

The story behind the answer

The pula is the official currency of Botswana, introduced in 1976 to replace the South African rand.

The word pula means “rain” in Setswana, an especially meaningful name in Botswana’s generally dry climate. Rain is highly valued in the country and is also reflected in Botswana’s national motto, “Pula,” which expresses a wish for rain and prosperity. The currency is divided into 100 thebe, a word meaning “shield.”

The Bank of Botswana issues pula banknotes and coins. Botswana’s currency code is BWP, and its value has historically been managed through a basket arrangement involving major currencies. The pula is used throughout Botswana, while neighbouring countries have their own currencies.

The pula is sometimes confused with the rand because Botswana borders South Africa and the two economies are closely connected. Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, lies near the South African border, but the rand is not Botswana’s official currency.
