What is the nickname of Lacoste’s crocodile logo?

The story behind the answer

Lacoste’s crocodile logo is nicknamed “The Crocodile.”

The emblem comes from tennis champion René Lacoste, whose persistence and court style earned him the nickname “the Crocodile.” The story is often linked to a wager involving a crocodile-skin suitcase, and an American journalist helped popularize the nickname in the 1920s.

Lacoste’s friend Robert George drew a crocodile for Lacoste, and the image became associated with the player. When Lacoste founded the clothing company with André Gillier in 1933, the crocodile was placed on the garments. It became one of the earliest prominent examples of a visible clothing logo worn on the outside of a shirt.

Although many people casually call the emblem an alligator or lizard, Lacoste’s official identity is a crocodile. The logo has been redrawn and modernized over time, but its connection to René Lacoste’s tennis nickname remains the essential origin story.
