The Hart is awarded annually to the player judged most valuable to his team during the NHL regular season. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association vote for the award, ranking candidates from first through fifth place.

The trophy was donated to the NHL by David Hart, the father of Montreal Canadiens coach and general manager Cecil Hart. It was first awarded after the 1923–24 season, when Ottawa Senators centre Frank Nighbor became the inaugural winner. The original trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1960, and the replacement became known as the Hart Memorial Trophy.

The Hart is different from the Conn Smythe Trophy, which recognizes the most valuable player during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Art Ross Trophy instead goes to the regular-season points leader, while the Vezina Trophy honors the NHL’s top goaltender.
