Johannes Vermeer was Dutch.

Vermeer was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age, the flourishing period of art and culture in the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. His surviving works are strongly associated with Dutch genre painting, especially carefully observed interiors showing domestic life, musicians, readers, and household tasks. He lived and worked primarily in Delft, in Holland.

Calling him Dutch is a nationality, not a statement that he was born in the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands. Vermeer was born in 1632, when the region formed part of the Dutch Republic, which existed from the late sixteenth century until 1795. In art history, he is therefore regularly described as a Dutch painter of the Baroque period.

Vermeer’s nationality can also be confused with Flemish identity because Flanders and the Dutch Republic shared artistic, commercial, and cultural ties. His mother’s family had roots in Antwerp, in the Spanish Netherlands, but Vermeer himself was born, registered, worked, and died in Delft. He is consequently classified as Dutch, alongside contemporaries such as Rembrandt and Frans Hals.
