Abraham Van Helsing is Dutch in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.
Van Helsing is introduced as a professor and physician summoned from the Netherlands by Dr. John Seward. His extraordinary expertise extends beyond medicine: Stoker describes him as a scholar of philosophy, metaphysics, law, and several sciences. That wide-ranging knowledge makes him uniquely prepared to recognize Dracula as a vampire when conventional doctors cannot explain Lucy Westenra’s illness.
The character’s name and background are sometimes blurred by later adaptations. Movies and television series have portrayed Van Helsing with different accents, nationalities, ages, and occupations, but the original literary character is Dutch. He is also not simply a monster hunter: his medical investigation, experiments, and knowledge of folklore drive much of the group’s strategy against Dracula.
Van Helsing leads the campaign to destroy Lucy’s vampiric form and later helps organize the pursuit of Dracula. His Dutch identity is therefore a detail of Stoker’s characterization, not a reference to Dracula’s Transylvanian origins or to the English setting where much of the novel unfolds.
