What is the National Pokédex number of Mew, the final species in Generation I?

The story behind the answer

Mew is National Pokédex number 151 and is the final species in Generation I.

Mew is a Mythical Pokémon introduced in the original Pokémon Red and Green games. It was designed as a secret addition and was not normally obtainable through ordinary gameplay. Its hidden presence helped generate rumors and encouraged players to keep investigating the games after completing their main objectives.

Mew is a Psychic-type Pokémon and is associated with the origin of many other Pokémon in the games’ mythology. Its Pokédex description and story helped establish the idea that rare Pokémon could have unusual biological or legendary significance.

Mew is sometimes confused with Mewtwo, which is numbered 150 and appears immediately before it in the National Pokédex. Mewtwo is a genetically engineered Pokémon created from Mew’s DNA, while Mew is the older mythical species. The pair also feature prominently in the first Pokémon animated movie.
