What is the national capital of Bhutan?

The story behind the answer

Thimphu is the national capital of Bhutan.

The city lies in a Himalayan valley in western Bhutan along the Wang Chuu, also called the Thimphu Chuu. It became Bhutan's capital in 1961, when the country began moving its central administration away from Punakha. Thimphu remains the political, governmental, and largest urban centre of Bhutan.

Unlike many national capitals, Thimphu has no traffic lights. A manually operated traffic system at a central intersection became a well-known local feature, although the city has grown substantially and traffic management has become more complex.

Punakha was Bhutan's former winter capital and still contains the Punakha Dzong, a major fortress-monastery. Paro is home to Bhutan's international airport and the famous Taktsang, or Tiger's Nest, monastery. Bhutan's constitutional monarchy was established in 2008 after the first democratic national elections.
