What is the national animal of Qatar?
Answer
Arabian Oryx
Answer
Arabian Oryx
The national animal of Qatar is the Arabian oryx. This striking desert antelope is recognized by its bright white coat, dark facial markings, broad hooves, and long, straight or slightly curved horns.
The Arabian oryx, scientifically known as Oryx leucoryx, is native to the Arabian Peninsula and is closely associated with the region’s harsh desert environment. Its pale coat reflects sunlight, while its ability to survive with limited water makes it a powerful symbol of endurance and adaptation.
The species once disappeared from the wild across much of Arabia because of hunting and habitat pressures. Qatar participated in conservation and captive-breeding efforts known as Operation Oryx, helping establish populations that were later reintroduced. Oryx were released into Qatar’s wilderness in 1982, and breeding continues in protected areas such as Al Maha Sanctuary.
A common mix-up is choosing the falcon, camel, or Arabian horse: all are important symbols of Qatari heritage, but they are not Qatar’s national animal. The Arabian oryx is also a national animal of several other countries, including Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Jordan.
