What is the NASA name of the ISS Node 1 module?

NASA’s name for ISS Node 1 is Unity.

Unity was the first U.S.-built component of the International Space Station and forms a key connection between the Russian Orbital Segment and the U.S. Orbital Segment. It launched aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour on December 4, 1998, during STS-88.

The cylindrical module has six Common Berthing Mechanism ports: forward, aft, port, starboard, zenith, and nadir. These connection points allowed Unity to link the station’s early elements and later support modules, trusses, visiting vehicles, and equipment.

Unity is often confused with Harmony and Tranquility because all three are ISS nodes. Their numbers distinguish them: Unity is Node 1, Harmony is Node 2, and Tranquility is Node 3. Unity was also the module that the STS-88 crew joined to the already orbiting Russian-built Zarya module, creating the station’s initial connected structure.
