What is the name of Wimbledon's main court?
Answer
Centre Court
Answer
Centre Court
Wimbledon’s main court is called Centre Court. It is the tournament’s principal stadium and traditionally hosts the most important matches, including the men’s and women’s singles finals.
The name dates back to the club’s original grounds on Worple Road. In the early layout, the principal court was positioned among the surrounding courts, effectively in the centre of the site. The name survived when the club moved to Church Road in 1922, even though the court was no longer literally at the centre of all the grounds.
Centre Court is also famous for its Royal Box, where members of the British royal family and other distinguished guests watch matches. A retractable roof was completed in 2009, allowing play to continue during rain. The first Wimbledon match played under a closed roof involved Amélie Mauresmo and Dinara Safina. A common mix-up is assuming Wimbledon names its main courts after famous players, as the US Open does with Arthur Ashe Stadium; Wimbledon instead retains numbered courts, with Centre Court as the prominent exception.
