Wikipedia’s machine-learning bot that automatically detects and reverts vandalism is ClueBot NG. The “NG” stands for “Next Generation,” distinguishing it from the original ClueBot.
ClueBot NG was created in 2010 by Wikipedia volunteers Christopher Breneman and Naomi Amethyst. It watches edits and evaluates signals associated with vandalism, using machine-learning techniques alongside Bayesian statistical methods. When an edit is judged highly likely to be vandalism, the bot can revert it and issue an appropriate warning.
The bot is best understood as a rapid first line of defense rather than a perfect judge. Good-faith edits can sometimes look suspicious, so Wikipedia’s wider anti-vandalism system still depends on human patrollers, watchlists, page histories, and community oversight. AntiVandalBot is a plausible-sounding distractor, but ClueBot NG is the well-known machine-learning anti-vandalism bot associated with the English Wikipedia.
