What is the name of Warren Buffett's first wife?

The story behind the answer

Warren Buffett’s first wife was Susan Buffett, also known as Susan Thompson Buffett.

Susan and Warren Buffett married in 1952 at Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They had three children: Susan Alice, Howard and Peter. Susan later became known for her activism, philanthropy and support for civil rights, abortion rights and birth control, as well as for her work with the Buffett Foundation.

The couple began living separately in 1977, when Susan moved to San Francisco to pursue singing. They nevertheless remained married and continued to appear together publicly and maintain a close relationship. Susan died in 2004 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. Her charitable legacy later continued through organizations associated with her name.

Astrid Menks is a frequent source of confusion because Warren Buffett married her in 2006, after Susan’s death. Katharine Graham was Buffett’s friend and a Washington Post figure, not his wife. “Susan Buffett” is the fair quiz answer, although her birth name was Susan Thompson.
