Twitter’s live audio chat feature introduced in 2021 was called Spaces.
Twitter developed Spaces during the surge of interest in live social-audio platforms, especially Clubhouse. The company began testing the feature with iOS users in late 2020, then expanded testing to Android users in March 2021. Spaces officially became available globally on May 3, 2021, although hosting was initially limited to accounts with at least 600 followers.
A Space is a live audio room: a host starts the conversation, selected speakers can talk, and other users can listen. Unlike a traditional phone call, Spaces was designed for public, audience-driven discussions. Twitter later added features such as co-hosts, ticketed rooms, recordings, and expanded access so that anyone could create a Space from the mobile app.
A common mix-up is Clubhouse, which helped popularize social audio but was a separate service. Facebook’s similar product was called Live Audio Rooms, while Twitter’s name was Spaces.
