What is the name of Timberland's sustainability rating system introduced in 2006?

The story behind the answer

Timberland’s sustainability rating system was called the Green Index.

The Green Index was designed to communicate environmental information about individual products, much like a nutrition label communicates information about food. Its criteria could cover areas such as materials, chemicals, energy use, and manufacturing impacts, giving shoppers a more structured way to compare products.

There is a dating nuance behind this question. Timberland introduced an “Our Footprint” packaging and labeling initiative in 2006, while the Green Index rating and hangtag developed from that initiative and appeared on selected footwear around 2007. The company’s 2006 corporate-responsibility reporting nevertheless describes the Green Index rating system as a new program, so Green Index is the canonical name being sought.

It is easy to confuse the system with Earthkeepers, which was Timberland’s broader environmentally focused product and corporate-responsibility platform. Green Label, Eco-Rating, and Earth Index are not the name of this Timberland rating system.
