What is the name of the young wizard protagonist in J.K. Rowling's series?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter is the young wizard protagonist of J. K. Rowling's series. The seven novels follow Harry from the moment he learns, on his eleventh birthday, that he is a wizard through his years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry begins the story as an orphan living unhappily with his aunt, uncle, and cousin. At Hogwarts, he becomes close friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, joins Gryffindor house, and gradually discovers the truth about the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. The central conflict concerns Voldemort's attempt to regain power and Harry's role in opposing him.

Readers sometimes choose Ron Weasley because he is one of the series' three main heroes, or Neville Longbottom because his courage becomes increasingly important. Percy Jackson belongs to a different modern fantasy series, created by Rick Riordan. Harry's full name is Harry James Potter, and the first novel was published in 1997 as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the United States.
