The young mod at the center of Quadrophenia is Jimmy. Pete Townshend’s 1973 rock opera follows Jimmy, a working-class London teenager whose identity is bound up with mod style, scooter culture, music, drugs and conflict with the older generation.
Set mainly in London and Brighton in 1965, the story tracks Jimmy’s growing disillusionment. He struggles with dead-end work, clashes with his parents, loses his girlfriend to his best friend and becomes increasingly uncertain about where he belongs. His trip to Brighton, initially associated with freedom and excitement, ultimately exposes the gap between mod fantasy and ordinary adult life.
Jimmy is not the same character as Tommy, the deaf, blind and mute central figure of The Who’s earlier rock opera. Kevin, Billy and Tommy are therefore tempting but incorrect alternatives. Jimmy also remains the protagonist of the 1979 film adaptation, played by Phil Daniels, with Sting portraying the older mod leader known as the Ace Face.
