The yogurt-based drink commonly served with Indian meals is lassi.
Lassi is a traditional beverage from the Indian subcontinent, especially associated with Punjab. It is made by blending yogurt with water and may be seasoned with salt, cumin, cardamom, rosewater, or fruit. Sweet mango lassi is a modern restaurant favorite, while salty lassi is an older savory style.
Traditionally, lassi was often prepared from water-buffalo milk and served chilled in a clay cup called a kulhar. The name refers to yogurt mixed with water in Punjabi and Hindi-Urdu. It is not the same as buttermilk: buttermilk is the liquid left after churning butter, while lassi begins with yogurt. Chai is tea, and sharbat is generally a sweet fruit or floral drink.
