What is the name of the world's highest unclimbed mountain?

The story behind the answer

The world’s highest unclimbed mountain is generally identified as Gangkhar Puensum, a 7,570-meter peak on or near the Bhutan–China border.

Gangkhar Puensum is part of the Himalaya and is Bhutan’s highest mountain. Its Dzongkha name is commonly translated as “White Peak of the Three Spiritual Brothers.” Although several expeditions attempted the mountain in the 1980s, none reached the summit, leaving it the highest mountain summit not known to have been fully climbed.

The mountain’s unclimbed status is closely connected to Bhutanese policy and culture. Bhutan prohibited climbing peaks above 6,000 meters in 1994, reportedly out of respect for sacred mountains and because of limited high-altitude rescue resources. Since 2003, mountaineering has been banned entirely in Bhutan, making a legitimate future summit attempt unlikely while those rules remain.

Mount Everest, K2, and Annapurna are sometimes confused with the answer because they are among the world’s most famous high peaks. However, all three have been successfully summited. “Highest unclimbed” can involve incomplete expedition records, but Gangkhar Puensum is the standard answer.
