Hogwarts is the wizarding school founded by four medieval witches and wizards in J.K. Rowling’s fiction.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in Scotland and serves as the main educational setting of the Harry Potter novels. Its four founders are Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.
The school is divided into four houses named after its founders. Students are sorted into Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, and the houses compete for the annual House Cup. Hogwarts also has a headmaster, resident ghosts, moving staircases, and enchanted classrooms.
Harry Potter receives his invitation shortly before his eleventh birthday and attends from the first novel onward. Other wizarding schools appear in the wider fictional setting, including Beauxbatons Academy and the Durmstrang Institute, but Hogwarts is the series’ central school.
