What is the name of the well where the gods hold their daily council?
Answer
Urðarbrunnr
Answer
Urðarbrunnr
Urðarbrunnr is the well where the gods hold their daily council.
Urðarbrunnr, or Urd’s Well, lies beneath or beside Yggdrasil, the world tree. In the Prose Edda, the gods travel there each day to hold court and settle matters. The well is associated with the Norns—Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld—who shape or oversee the destinies of gods and humans.
The Norns care for Yggdrasil by drawing water from the well and mixing it with clay before applying it to the tree, helping preserve its branches from decay. The name means “Well of Urðr,” with Urðr often connected to what has become or what is destined.
This well is not the same as Mímisbrunnr, whose waters provide wisdom and knowledge, or Hvergelmir, a primordial well connected with the world’s rivers and serpents. Elivagar refers to the icy rivers, not a council well.
