What is the name of the volcano where the One Ring is destroyed?

The One Ring is destroyed in Mount Doom, the volcano in Mordor. Frodo and Sam reach its Cracks of Doom after crossing Mordor, and the Ring is finally destroyed when Gollum bites off Frodo’s finger and falls into the fire while clutching it.

Mount Doom is important because Sauron forged the Ring there in the volcano’s fires. The Ring is so strongly bound to Sauron’s power that ordinary fire cannot destroy it; returning it to the place where it was made is the only practical way to unmake it. Its destruction strips Sauron of his power and causes his realm to collapse.

The mountain is also known as Orodruin, meaning “Mountain of Blazing Fire” in Tolkien’s fictional languages. It stands in Mordor near Barad-dûr, Sauron’s fortress. Mount Doom is sometimes confused with Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, or Caradhras, but those are separate mountains with different roles in Middle-earth’s history.
