What is the name of the venue that has hosted the Oscars since 2002?
Answer
Dolby Theatre
Answer
Dolby Theatre
The Dolby Theatre is the venue that has hosted the Oscars since 2002.
The theatre opened in Hollywood in 2001 as the Kodak Theatre, built as part of the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex, now known as Ovation Hollywood. The Academy Awards began using it for the 74th ceremony on March 24, 2002. In 2012, after Kodak’s bankruptcy and departure from the naming agreement, the venue was renamed the Dolby Theatre after Dolby Laboratories.
That history explains why Kodak Theatre is a tempting but outdated answer. The building is still the same Oscar venue, but Dolby Theatre is its current official name and the canonical answer today. It replaced the Shrine Auditorium for the 2002 ceremony; earlier Oscar ceremonies were also held at venues including the Pantages Theatre and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The theatre seats roughly 3,400 people and was designed specifically to accommodate major live productions.
