What is the name of the treaty that recognized U.S. independence in 1783?

The story behind the answer

The treaty that recognized U.S. independence in 1783 was the Treaty of Paris.

Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Its first article recognized the United States, formed from the thirteen former colonies, as free, sovereign, and independent states.

The agreement also set boundaries, granted American fishermen access to waters near Newfoundland, addressed debts and Loyalist property, and established arrangements for prisoners and captured territory. The treaty ended the American Revolutionary War in diplomatic terms.

The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the later Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. It is also distinct from the Peace of Paris, a group of treaties involving Britain and several European powers that concluded the wider conflict.
