What is the name of the town barber in Mayberry? The town barber is Floyd Lawson.

Floyd Lawson, usually called Floyd the Barber, runs the barbershop in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry. He is portrayed as kindhearted, slow-paced, and occasionally absent-minded, making his shop one of the show’s familiar community gathering places.

Howard McNear played Floyd for most of the character’s appearances, although Walter Baldwin portrayed him in an earlier appearance. McNear’s declining health prevented him from returning for the show’s final season, and the series explained Floyd’s absence by having him retire after earning enough money.

Viewers sometimes remember the character simply as “Floyd the Barber,” but Floyd Lawson is the surname established by the series. In an early appearance, he was called Floyd Colby and his shop was named Colby’s Tonsorial Parlor, an inconsistency later superseded by the Lawson name.
