What is the name of the three-legged crow that lives in the sun?

The story behind the answer

The three-legged crow that lives in the sun is Jinwu, commonly called the Golden Crow.

In Chinese mythology, the sun crow is usually called the sanzuwu, meaning “three-legged crow,” or associated with the name Jinwu, the Golden Crow. It is a solar creature whose unusual three legs symbolize the sun and its movement across the sky. The image appears in Chinese myth, art, and cosmological symbolism.

One famous legend tells of ten solar crows, sons of the sun deity Di Jun and the goddess Xihe. They normally took turns crossing the heavens, but one day all ten appeared together, scorching the earth. The archer Hou Yi shot down nine of them, leaving one sun to continue illuminating the world. This story explains why Hou Yi is often connected with the Golden Crow, even though he is not the crow itself.

The three-legged crow is also called sanzuwu in Chinese and appears in early cultural imagery, including Neolithic Yangshao pottery. Qinglong is the Azure Dragon, Peng is a giant mythic bird, and Bi Fang is a one-legged fire-associated bird, so none is the solar crow.
