What is the name of the third volume of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The third volume of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is The Return of the King.

The book was published in 1955 by George Allen & Unwin. Its narrative follows the final stages of the War of the Ring, including the siege of Minas Tirith, Aragorn’s return to his kingship, and the destruction of the One Ring.

The first two volumes are The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Tolkien conceived the work as a single long story, but publishing and production considerations led to its release in three volumes.

The title can cause confusion because Aragorn’s royal return is only one part of the volume. The book also contains Frodo and Sam’s journey through Mordor, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and the aftermath of the Ring’s destruction.
