The theatre in the Sydney Opera House named after an Australian soprano is the Joan Sutherland Theatre.

It honours Dame Joan Sutherland (1926–2010), the Sydney-born dramatic coloratura soprano celebrated internationally for her bel canto performances. Often nicknamed “La Stupenda,” she helped revive interest in operas by composers such as Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini.

The venue was originally called the Opera Theatre. It was officially renamed the Joan Sutherland Theatre on 16 October 2012, two years after Sutherland’s death. She had a particularly strong connection with the Opera House, making her first performances there in 1974 and returning regularly for major productions.

A common mix-up is confusing the theatre with the whole Sydney Opera House, or with the Concert Hall. The Joan Sutherland Theatre is the Opera House’s principal proscenium venue for opera and ballet, and it remains the Sydney home of Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet.
