What is the name of the tallest known living tree?
Answer
Hyperion
Answer
Hyperion
Hyperion is the tallest known living tree.
Hyperion is a coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, growing in a remote part of Redwood National Park in northern California. Its measured height is about 115.85 metres, or 380.3 feet. The tree was discovered and measured in 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor.
Because the tree stands in a protected area, its exact location is not publicized. Limiting access helps protect the surrounding forest floor and reduces the risk of visitors damaging the tree or creating an informal trail. Coast redwoods can grow exceptionally tall because their wood, climate, and vascular systems allow them to transport water to great heights.
Hyperion is not the largest tree by volume. General Sherman, a giant sequoia, has far more trunk volume, while some ancient bristlecone pines are much older. Tree records can also change when new trees are measured or when improved equipment produces more precise results.
