What is the name of the talking horse in The Horse and His Boy?

The story behind the answer

The talking horse in The Horse and His Boy is Bree. His full Narnian name is Breehy-hinny-brinny-hoohy-hah, usually shortened to Bree for convenience.

Bree was born as a free Talking Horse in Narnia but was captured as a foal and taken south to Calormen. There he was forced to conceal his intelligence and lived as a prized warhorse owned by a Calormene nobleman. When he discovers that Shasta is also seeking escape, Bree proposes that they flee north toward Archenland and Narnia.

Bree is brave, knowledgeable, and capable, but he is also vain and boastful. His pride becomes one of the novel’s central character flaws, especially because he has spent years comparing himself with ordinary horses and imagining himself superior. His fear of lions also exposes the limits of his confidence.

Readers sometimes confuse Bree with Hwin, the other talking horse in the story. Bree is Shasta’s companion and a male horse; Hwin is a female Talking Mare who travels with Aravis. Together, the two pairs help warn Archenland of a planned Calormene invasion.
