The subway system in Mexico City is called the Mexico City Metro.

Its formal operating organization is the Sistema de Transporte Colectivo, usually abbreviated STC Metro. The first line opened on September 4, 1969, after Mexico City struggled with severe road congestion and overcrowded surface transport. Early planning also benefited from French technical assistance, which helped shape the system’s rubber-tired technology.

The network is distinctive for its station symbols and line colors. Designer Lance Wyman helped create the pictorial logos, making stations easier to identify in a city where literacy was not universal when the system opened. Many lines use pneumatic tires, although Lines A and 12 use conventional steel-wheel railway technology.

Mexico City Metro is sometimes confused with Metrobús, an extensive bus rapid-transit network, or Tren Suburbano, a separate suburban railway. RUTA is also a different transit service, not the city’s metro system.
