The submarine mountain range running through the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

It is a mid-ocean ridge formed at a divergent plate boundary, where tectonic plates move apart and magma rises from the mantle. As the magma cools, it creates new oceanic crust. A long rift valley runs along much of the ridge’s axis, marking the active spreading zone.

The ridge extends from the Arctic region southward toward the Bouvet triple junction in the South Atlantic. It separates the North American and Eurasian plates in the north and the South American and African plates farther south. Although mostly underwater, it rises above sea level in places, most famously in Iceland.

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is part of a nearly continuous global system of mid-ocean ridges. Its mapping in the 1950s helped establish seafloor spreading and gave powerful support to modern plate tectonics. It is not the East Pacific Rise, which lies in the Pacific Ocean.
