What is the name of the street where Casa Vicens is located?

The story behind the answer

Casa Vicens is located on Carrer de les Carolines in Barcelona. The street is in the Gràcia district, and the address is closely associated with the house’s original urban setting and later alterations.

Gaudí designed Casa Vicens for Manuel Vicens i Montaner, and construction took place from 1883 to 1885. At the time, the area was less densely built than central Barcelona. The house was conceived as a summer residence, with gardens, galleries and strong connections between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Carrer de les Carolines has not always looked exactly as it does today. The street was widened in 1925, bringing the building closer to street level and prompting changes to the entrance. That same period saw an extension designed by Joan Baptista Serra after Gaudí declined to undertake the work. The extension is distinguishable from Gaudí’s original portion by differences in façade composition and tile arrangement.

Passeig de Gràcia is instead associated with Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, while Carrer de Provença is the address of Casa Milà. These nearby names are common mix-ups in Barcelona architecture quizzes.
